Plymouth Argyle have bolstered their squad with three new signings this week. Goalkeeper Callum Burton, defender James Bolton and midfielder Jordan Houghton have arrived at Home Park for the 2021/22 campaign.
Burton signs for the club after leaving Cambridge United, Bolton joins on an undisclosed fee from League One rivals Portsmouth, while Houghton returns to Home Park following his departure from Milton Keynes Dons.
The new arrivals extend Ryan Lowe’s list of summer signings to six, with the Pilgrims boss having already lured defensive trio James Wilson, Dan Scarr and Macaulay Gillesphey to the club in recent weeks.
Newport-born Burton, 24, began his career at Shrewsbury, making one appearance for the Shrews in four years before he moved to Hull City. After playing three games for Salford City and 19 games for Chesterfield in two loan spells, Burton swapped Hull for Cambridge in 2019 without playing a game for the Tigers.
He enjoyed more match action with the U’s, playing 48 times in two seasons before his departure this summer. After coming through the ranks at Macclesfield Town, 26-year-old Bolton signed for National League side Halifax Town in 2014 following a succession of loans, playing 91 times in two years with the Shaymen.
A successful stint with league rivals Gateshead followed in 2016/17 before Bolton made the jump to League One to sign for Shrewsbury Town, where he would play 82 times across two seasons. That was enough for Kenny Jackett to lure him to Fratton Park in 2019, with the defender playing 33 times in all competitions in 2019/20.
He was reduced to a bit-part role last term, playing 20 times in all competitions. His sole strike in 13 league games came in a 2-2 draw with Argyle, with Bolton bagging the equaliser for Pompey in the dying embers of the game.
Chertsey-born midfielder Houghton, 25, returns to Argyle after a brief loan period under Derek Adams in 2016, when he scored one goal in ten games as Argyle finished fifth in League Two, with the Pilgrims going on to suffer play-off final heartbreak at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.
Houghton also had loans at Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers before signing permanently for MK Dons in 2018. He enjoyed a fruitful three-year spell at Stadium MK, playing 104 times in all competitions during his stay in Buckinghamshire.
Argyle will visit Sky Bet Championship side Peterborough United in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Lowe is due to take his side to the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday, August 10, although the date is yet to be confirmed.
Darren Ferguson’s side did the double over Argyle last season, winning 1-0 at home and 3-0 at Home Park and as the Posh were promoted to the Championship behind champions Hull City.
Argyle were eliminated in the second round of last year’s competition, squandering a 2- 0 lead to lose 3-2 at League Two side Leyton Orient.
