If you think you haven’t got enough money to warrant visiting a financial adviser, think again. “How much is enough?” says Scott Whitfeld, managing partner of Copper Rock Financial Planning in Truro’s historic Lemon Street.

“How much money you have isn’t a consideration. Everyone deserves to have help with their financial planning; it can be tricky to navigate, so we would like to be known as a company who will help anyone, in any situation.”

Scott’s down-to-earth approach is no doubt down to his Cornish upbringing, being Truro born and bred.

He has been a financial adviser since 2007, and readily admits that he fell into the profession by happy accident. “I’d been working as a retail manager, but wanted a change, so my brother got me a job with a local mortgage company,” he recalls.

“I felt that with qualifications, I could do more for people – something with real purpose. It all spiralled from there.”

Having traded as Whitfeld Financial Planning, Scott grew the business and expanded his team, which now includes fellow financial advisers Paul Arnold and Sam Reed, along with five full-time support staff.

To reflect this growth, he decided to rebrand the partnership.

“I wanted something that would reflect Cornwall’s heritage and roots, but without being too heavy-handed as we have clients all over the country,” says Scott. “With its nod towards mining, Copper Rock seemed to do just that.”

Together they specialise in all areas of financial planning, with pension planning playing a central role.

Around 40 per cent of the business revolves around pension planning: “Since the government introduced the Pensions Freedom Act in 2015, people have had more questions around pensions than ever before, with much more flexibility in using the benefits in retirement. It’s put pensions back on the map, which is great.”

Then there are investments, mortgages, protection, equity release and advice for corporate clients and trusts.

Scott and his team are happy to give a no-obligation financial review. Lockdown has changed meetings, and for the better, Scott believes..

He said: “We’ve been holding a lot of video calls over the last 12 months; freeing up more time usually spent in the car, allowing me to spend more time in conversation with my clients, which can only be a good thing.”
